EXPERIENCE

Ed Stein has served as Commonwealth’s Attorney for Alleghany County, Covington, Clifton Forge and Iron Gate since 2003. Prior to that he was an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in the same area for 16 years. He has extensive experience in all phases of criminal prosecution and successfully tried thousands of cases including murders, rapes, child sexual abuse and other serious crimes. In addition to his work here he was appointed by the court to serve as a special prosecutor in Rockbridge County, Montgomery County, Pittsylvania County and the City of Buena Vista.

EDUCATION

Ed is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Washington & Lee School of Law in Lexington, Virginia. He has attended numerous continuing legal education programs sponsored by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys and the Virginia State Bar. In 2007 he has attended classes on Search and Seizure, Constitutional Law and the Prosecution of Crimes Committed on the Internet. He has also attended joint training with the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department and other Law Enforcement throughout Western Virginia on Internet Child Predators and Gang Violence.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Among his activities Ed is a member of the Board of Directors of the local Domestic Violence Shelter (Safe Homes). He is serving his second term as a member of the regional Court Community Corrections Board and the regional Alcohol Safety Action Program Board, appointed to both by the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors. He has also been a member of the Covington Kiwanis Club since 1983.

In the past Ed has served as the Chairman of the Alleghany Highlands School Board and President of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce.

FAMILY

Ed and his wife Kathleen live in the Oakwood Forest section of Alleghany County. The couple have 3 children. Amy, a 2003 graduate of Covington High School currently lives in Germany with her husband and their son. Corey, a 2003 graduate of Alleghany High School is serving his country in the U.S. Army and is stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri with his wife and their daughter. Zoe is a 7th grade student at Clifton Middle School.
